Over 100 monuments of the Bulgarian national hero, revolutionary Vasil Levski (1837-1873) exist around the world.
This has become clear from a survey conducted by the Bulgarian genealogical association "Rodoznanie" and kafene.bg, whose results were announced recently.
On Saturday, July 18, 2009, Bulgarians celebrate the 172 anniversary of Levski's birth.
According to the initiative to count Levski's monuments, there are 96 monuments of the revolutionary in Bulgaria, and 14 more around the world.
The Bulgarian capital Sofia has the largest number of Levski monuments - 7; his oldest monument is also in Sofia - the so called "Levski Momument" located on the spot where Levski was hanged by the Ottoman Turkish authorities for his activity to liberate Bulgaria.
Sofia is followed by Varna, which has 4 monuments of Levski, and Vratsa with 3. There are also 3 monuments of Levski in Moldova (which has a large ethnic Bulgarian population), and 2 in each Serbia and the Ukraine. Monuments of Levski can also be found in Paris, France; Toronto, Canada; Washington, DC, USA; Cienfuengos, Cuba; Buenos Ayres, Argentina; and Bucharest, Romania.
The initiative for counting Levski's monuments around the world continues with its second stage, which will end on February 19, 2010, when Bulgarians will remember the 137th year since the death of their national hero.
