Five states from Southeast Europe are signing Monday in Turkey's capital Ankara the agreement for the construction of the Nabucco gas transit pipeline.
The agreement will be signed by representatives of Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Turkey; Bulgaria will be represented by the outgoing Socialist Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev.
The ceremony will also be attended by the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, the US Envoy on Eurasia energy matters, Richard Morningstar, and the EU Commissioner for Energy, Andris Piegbals; it will be opened by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyp Erdogan.
The Nabucco pipeline is the major EU for diversifying the Union's natural gas supply by bringing gas from Central Asia and the Middle East through Turkey while circumventing Russia.
Nabucco is expected to be completed in 2014; it will be long 3 300 km, and will have the capacity to transport 25-31 cubic meters of natural gas per year.
