Bulgarian environmentalists will protest on Thursday against the country's preoccupation with flogging the mountains of Rila and Vitosha and Irakli beach on the Black Sea coast to developers as quickly as possible.

The start of the protest is scheduled for 5.30 pm in front of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia.

"Despite the support of hundreds of thousands of citizens, journalists, public figures and even politicians, the Bulgarian institutions are not doing anything to stop the investors' interests in these places," the eco-activities commented.

The protesters demand immediate suspension of the operations of the illegal ski lifts at Panichishte and Kartala in the Rila mountain, a ban on the construction works in the Riverside Village at Irakli beach and the plan for the construction of a new ski zone in Vitosha.

The beach at Irakli has turned over the last few years into an emblem of Bulgaria's nascent protest movement after a campaign was launched in 2005 by a handful of "beach people" to save it from the construction that has claimed 90% of the coast.

Since then, the movement has widened its scope to try to save dozens more of Bulgaria's wild beaches and mountains.
