1 in 10 Convicted to Jail Criminals in Bulgaria Is Hiding
Roughly one in 10 convicted to jail criminals in Bulgaria is hiding from the law, reports Sega daily.
The outgoing German Ambassador to Sofia, Michael Geier, explained that in his country the Galevi brothers have become more notorious than the abuse of the EU funds.
Geier spoke to Bulgarian reporters Monday, just days before the end of his appointment as German Ambassador in Bulgaria, stating the Galevi brothers information was something that was followed with intense interest by scores of Germans.
The Ambassador said he was shocked by the huge attention on the part of German people regarding the issue, adding this was just one of those sensational news that would be quickly forgotten.
According to Geier, the Galevi brothers problem did not trigger political concern in Germany but rather was discussed among people, who are prejudiced towards Bulgaria and used the information to fuel similar opinions and their dissemination.
The Ambassador further stated he was against introducing a safe-guard close for Bulgaria's EU membership, something he saw as more harmful than beneficial.
In mid-June, Plamen Galev and Angel Hristov aka the "Galevi brothers" walked out of jail after both were allowed to run for parliamentary seats and thus receiving immunity from prosecution.
Hristov is the only candidate in the western city of Kyustednil of the Party for Liberal Alternative and Peace PLAM (FLAME) and its majority candidate in the city of Pernik. His registration documents were submitted on June 12 with the Regional Electoral Commission in Kyustendil.
On June 10, the Regional Electoral Commission confirmed that Galev, had been registered to run in the upcoming general elections.
Galev and Hristov, have been investigated over a long period of time for various crimes in the southwest town of Dupnitsa, most notably racketeering and organized crime.
The Sofia City Prosecutor recently officially moved the case against the Galevi brothers to the Sofia City Court and the two are charged with running an organized criminal group.
However, as official MP candidates, they receive immunity from prosecution and the Court will not be able to set a date for the trial.
