Thousands of Bulgarian citizen and trade union members rallied in downtown Sofia Friday.

The rally was organized by the Bulgarian Trade Union Confederation "Podkrepa" and included a march from the National "Vasil Levski" Stadium to the National "Alexander Nevski" cathedral in downtown Sofia.

In their "Memorandum for Economic and Social Stability of Bulgaria," the Unions insist on labor protection, and protection of workers' income; they propose a minimum monthly salary of BGN 400, lower Value Added Tax (VAT) for the most common goods, higher unemployment compensations, education and health care reforms.

The motto of the rally is "20 years of lies, robberies and treason are enough. We must change Bulgaria together."

At the beginning of the year an anti-government rally in the capital Sofia turned into a riot as hundreds of protesters clashed with police, smashed windows and damaged cars.

The riot in Sofia was the worst since 1997, when violent street protests forced the then Socialist government to step down for pushing the Balkan country into an economic meltdown.
