The Bulgarian Red Cross has alerted Bulgarian authorities that the Red Crescent has been registered in Targovishte in a direct violation of the Geneva Convention.

The Red Cross official website, redcross.bg, stated Wednesday that this is a violation of the Geneva Convention from 1949 and of Bulgaria's own law for the Red Cross.

The Targovishte Regional Court registered the Red Crescent on April 28 under the name of Fzeir Fzeirov.

The Geneva Convention states that only one organization, either the International Red Cross or the Red Crescent Movement can exist in a country.

The registration of both organizations in one country is a precedent in the movements' over 150 years of history and all of the 186 member-states they work in.

The Red Cross in Bulgaria fears that this case might cause a very unpleasant echo in the international community.
