Home Sweet Home: The Reality of Housing in Bulgaria Revealed
New data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) sheds light on the housing landscape in Bulgaria, painting a picture of the majority of Bulgarians residing in older homes.
The newly constructed residential buildings in Bulgaria in the first quarter of 2009 numbered 547, which is nearly 11% less compared to the same period of 2008.
The data was released Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (NSI).
The units in those buildings are 13% less compared to the firs quarter of 2008 - a total of 3 897.
The decrease when compared to the previous quarter is 43% with 432 less residential buildings constructed in the country.
The Region of the Black Sea capital Varna registers the highest number of new residential buildings - 128 with 727 units, followed by the Burgas Region - respectively 102 and 1 136, Plovdiv Region - 47 and 265 and the Sofia Region - 38 buildings with 580 units.
Not even one residential building has been completed in the first quarter of 2009 in the Kyustendil and Stara Zagora Regions.
The total area of the finished new residential buildings in the first quarter of 2009 is 294 000 square meters - 16% less compared to the same period of 2008.
The average area of a residential unit is also showing a decrease - from 78 square meters in the first quarter of 2008 to 75 square meters during the first 2009 quarter.
The new units in the city of Lovech on the average are the largest ones -151 square meters followed by Sofia with 126 square meters. They are the smallest in Vidin - 31 square meters and in Vratsa - 59.
