There are conflicting signals from India about whether it will resort to war over the disputed territory of Kashmir in the near future. Some reports on Monday suggested that officials were trying to dispel the impression that war was imminent or likely. However Deputy Foreign Minister Omar Abdullah rejected any softening of India's line on Kashmir, saying it would fight "Pakistan-sponsored terrorism" alone if necessary. International efforts to defuse the tension are focussed on a regional security conference which will see Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in the same room on Tuesday.
