Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov has supported the bid of Irina Bokova to become Director General of UNESCO.

Bulgaria's Ambassador to France and permanent UNESCO representative, Bokova, is currently on a campaign to drum up support for her bid, BGNES reported.

Speaking after opening the UNESCO conference - ‘International Conference on the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage and the Promotion of Cultural Diversity - a Response to Globalization' in Sofia, Parvanov said that Bokova has all the qualities needed for the position.

He added however that the most important thing at the moment is to show the UNESCO delegates what unique cultural and historical sites Bulgaria has to offer.

The executive council members from 44 countries will visit sites in Bulgaria listed in the UNESCO World Heritage database, such as the Boyana Church, the Rila Monastery, the Kazanlak Thracian Tomb, Plovdiv's old town, Veliko Tarnovo and the village of Arbanassi, over the next few days.

The forum is organized by Bulgaria's permanent representation in UNESCO, the National Committee on UNESCO and the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture and was opened Monday by Parvanov at the President's Boyana residence.

The announcement of who will be the next UNESCO Director General will be made before the end of the year.
