Car owners in Bulgaria will pay environmental taxes instead of the current excise duty starting form January 1, 2009.

That was announced by the Parliament's Budget Committee, as cited by the Pari Daily.

Currently, Bulgarian owners of cars over 163 horse powers, or 120 kW, must pay a single excise duty. Its amount varies from less than BGN 1000 to over BGN 20 000, depending on the car age and power.

The issue is a collision between European Union and Bulgarian Legislation in that field. There is an ongoing case against Bulgaria in the Court of Justice of the European Communities on the matter.
