The Indian police announced they did not have any proof that the father of the girl, who became one of the stars of the Slumdog Millionaire Oscar winning movie, had intentions to sell her.

The mother of the 9-year-old, Rubina Ali, requested an investigation of the case after the UK "News of the World" published information that the father had tried to sell Rubina for GBP 200,000.

The father, Rafiq Qureshi, and several residents of the Mumbai slums have been interrogated, but authorities said they had not found any proof of Qureshi ever intending to sell the girl and would not make an arrest.

Rubina, who played the youngest version of the leading female character, Latika, in the Oscar winner, lives with her father and her step-mother in a poor Mumbai neighborhood
