Russia PM Vladimir Putin is boycotting the Sofia Energy summit in protest against the planned Nabucco gas pipeline.
Russian daily newspaper Kommersant stated Wednesday that Putin cancelled his expected trip to Bulgaria's energy summit due to European countries concentrating on sourcing natural gas from outside Russia, suggesting that the Nabucco pipeline that sources gas from Azebaijan will harm EU-Russia relations.
Kommersant also said that Putin sees the summit as a frontal attack on Russia and Turkey, as it will push energy strategies that are not beneficial to both countries.
Meanwhile, more than ten heads of state have confirmed that they will be attending the Sofia summit. The leaders of Albania, Croatia, Azerbaijan, Montenegro Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece and Armenia will attend the forum. The Emir of Qatar will make his second visit to Bulgaria to attend the meeting.
The EC president, Jose Manuel Barroso, is also considering making a visit to the forum according to EC spokesman Mark Gray.
