Artists, who painted the largest remaining section of the Berlin Wall in 1990, began Tuesday repairing their works.
In 1990, 118 artists from 21 countries decorated what is called the longest open-air art gallery. Since then it has been damaged by the weather, exhaust fumes, vandals, and souvenir-seeking tourists, BGNES reported.
The restoration work is expected to be completed in time for the 20-year anniversary of the fall of the wall in November.
In 1992, the gallery was declared a historic monument by the Berlin city government, and has become one of the city's most visited tourist attractions, BGNES reminded.
The Russian artist, Dmitri Vrubel, who painted the famous image of East German leader Erich Honecker kissing his Soviet counterpart Leonid Brezhnev, however, said that he would not paint the same image again.
The Berlin Wall was built by communist authorities, and divided the city for 28 years. Its builders described it as an "anti-fascist protective barrier", and scores of people were killed by East German sentries as they tried to escape across it from east to west.
