The Bulgarian parliament voted on Tuesday to more than double the deposit that parties and coalitions should pay to join the general elections in the summer, a change that damages the chances of the green parties.

Defying the protests of the green formations, whose members are primarily young people, the MPs increased from BGN 20,000 to BGN 50,000 the deposit for parties, from BGN 40,000 to BGN 100,000 the deposit for coalitions and from BGN 5,000 to BGN 15,000 the deposit for initiative committees, which nominate independent candidates and those, who will be elected individually.

The deposit will not be paid back when the independent candidate or party has gathered less than 1% of the votes. The money will be collected in a fund for curing children with the Health Ministry.

The parliament unanimously adopted a ban on the use of mobile telephones and cameras in the voting booth. The pre-election campaign was reduced from 30 to 21 days.
