Declaration of the Council of Ministers of Republic of Bulgaria
The Government of Republic of Bulgaria accepts with satisfaction and gratitude Pope John Paul II’s statement that he had never believed in the so called “Bulgarian connection” in the attempt at his life in 1981 and defines it as a great injustice on Bulgarian people.
By means of that statement an ugly stain on Bulgaria’s image, non deservedly carried more than 20 years, was finally and completely cleared.
The Government expresses its gratitude for the Pontiff’s support to Bulgaria’s efforts on its way to European integration.
The cordial words of the Head of the Roman Catholic Church for Bulgaria and his visit here are to contribute for the increase of the attention and trust in our country as an important and reliable partner in international relations.
