Bulgaria Slaps Fine on CEZ Power Utility over Bills

Bulgaria's energy watchdog has fined Czech power utility CEZ BGN 500 000 for not introducing monthly power bills, it said on Wednesday.

The State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission announced that the Czech utility company has not complied with its last year's ruling to end its three-month power bills by the end of March in a bid to protect consumers' interests.

The regulator extended the deadline for the introduction of monthly bills until the end of June.

"The Czech utility should take all necessary steps to comply with the terms, set by the regulator," the watchdog said.

CEZ has not given any indications that it plans to do so, arguing that the shift would mean more expenses and higher bills for the consumers.

The company supplies power to over 2 million households and companies in western Bulgaria, including the capital Sofia.
