The flow of natural gas to Bulgaria has been reduced after a blast in Moldova disrupted gas supplies to the Balkans.

Valentin Zemlyanski spokesman for Ukrainian company Naftogaz told Darik Radio Wednesday that the flow of Russian gas to the Balkans was disrupted by a blast in Moldova but is continuing to flow using alternative pipelines.

The gas flow to the Balkan countries has been reduced from 40 M cubic meters to 24 M cubic meters, Zemlyanski stated.

Bulgargaz Executive Director, Angel Semerdzhiev, said that gas supplies to Bulgaria have been cut by 70%.

A Moldovan government spokesman reported earlier that the blast had occurred in Moldova's separatist region of Transdniestria, but could not confirm a report by Russia's Itar-Tass news agency that all transit supplies had been suspended.

"I can confirm there was an explosion on a gas pipeline near Tiraspol, spokesman Vitalie Condratchi said.

"Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii is convening a meeting of the state emergencies committee... There is no talk of terrorism," he concluded.
