28 cities and towns from all over Bulgaria and 45 buildings in Sofia will join Earth Hour 2009 Saturday evening.
They will switch off their electricity for one hour, beginning at 8:30 pm Bulgarian time, in sign of support for the Earth Hour 2009 initiative, whose goal is to send a powerful global message that serious action should be taken against climate change.
The initiative is organized by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and aims to reach as many people as possible, inviting communities, business and governments to switch off lights during Earth Hour.
Over 1 billion people from 2800 cities in 84 countries all over the world have declared their participation in the 2009 edition of Earth Hour. 85% of Sofia's residents have made the commitment to switch off their lights for one hour, according to data from a MBMD express poll.
Some of Sofia's most prominent buildings such as the National Theater, the Bulgarian National Bank, the National Palace of Culture and the Parliament will be dark Saturday evening at 8:30 pm. A candlelight concert will be held in front of the National Theater building in downtown Sofia.
All Bulgaria's embassies around the world are also invited to join in.

They include the Empire State Building in New York City, the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, considered the world's tallest twin building, Taipei 101, the current world's tallest building, the world's tallest hotel building in Dubai - the Burj Dubai, the CN Tower in Toronto, Moscow's Federation Tower, the Quirinale - the official residence of the President of the Italian Republic, Auckland's Sky Tower, the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower, the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, the Pyramids of Giza, the Niagara Falls, and, for the first time in the event's three-year existence, the New York headquarters of the United Nations.
Earth Hour 2008 took place in more then 25 major cities, on 6 continents, including Chicago, Copenhagen, Manila, Tel Aviv, Bangkok, Dublin and Toronto.
The event started two years ago with the citizens of just one city, Sydney in Australia.
