Bulgaria's Prime Minister Stanishev, and the President of the European Parliament Poettering, inaugurated Thursday in Brussels a statue presented by Bulgaria to the EP.

The sculpture is entitled "East-West. One Europe". It is the work of the Bulgarian sculptor Todor Azmanov. It is women with two faces reminding the Europeans never to forget the unnatural division of Europe which lasted for some 60 years.

In his speech, the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering underscored that this gift from the Bulgarian people to the EP symbolized Europe's unity, and that it cemented Bulgaria's position in the very heart of the EU.

"I welcome you warmly to the European Parliament", Poettering said in Bulgarian to his Bulgarian guests, pointing out that Bulgaria was "the oldest nation in Europe", and a meeting spot between East and West.

Poettering also reminded the words of the Bulgarian ruler who made Christianity the official Bulgarian religion, Knyaz Boris (852-889 A.D.) that he would "not give up even a stone from the Bulgarian land".

"Today the people of Bulgaria give a stone from their land to the European Parliament - a representative of all nations in Europe", Poettering concluded.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, said in turn that in times of crisis like the one Europe was facing at the moment, "more Europe is a guarantee for the success of the people of the EU".
