Will Bulgaria Have a Stable Government After Yet Another Election in June? Our Readers Have Spoken
On our Facebook page, readers were asked about Bulgaria's stability after the June elections
The young yet extremely popular formation of Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov is firm in running solo in the next general elections despite indications of unity of all opposition parties.
"GERB party will run solo in the next elections," Tsvetan Tsvetanov, formal leader of GERB party, told the national state-run television channel BNT on Thursday. He confirmed the words of his party informal leader Boyko Borisov that they will form their own government if enough votes are garnered. Tsvetanov, however, did not rule out the option of having to form a coalition and said negotiations will be held with all parties members of the European People's Party and the formations close to it.
Tsvetanov, whose party is not represented in parliament but has set off on a course to topple the current rulers after scoring nationwide gains in the local elections, said a coalition with any of the members of the ruling three-member government is out of the question.
"The widespread public discontent with the governments over the last eighteen years called for setting up GERB party, which attracted members from the two biggest right-wing parties the Union of Democratic Forces and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria," Tsvetanov, who is known to be Borissov most trusted aide, said.
Just a week ago polls said that the right wing, emblematic of Bulgaria's post-socialist transition, will not make it to the next parliament. Now that they have set to form a broad pre-election coalition, the chances for a ruling center-right majority and a new government by Sofia Mayor GERB party and the two biggest right-wing parties - UDF and DSB - seem quite realistic. Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov has however recently expressed the firm belief that his party would win a landslide victory and form coalition on its own with him as prime minister.
