Threats against any democratically elected politician were defined as outrageous by the former rapporteur for Bulgaria and British MEP, Geoffrey Van Orden.
Van Orden, who spoke in an interview for the BGNES news agency, stated that the problem must be eradicated immediately in order for Bulgaria to have true democracy. The Member of the European Parliament (MEP) spoke in connection with the recent possible assassination plot uncovered by the Bulgarian Secret Services, targeting the leader of Bulgaria's rightist opposition party "Order, Law, Justice" (RZS), Yane Yanev.
In the interview, Van Orden says that he had always been a strong supporter of the fight against oligarchy and corruption at the high echelons of power in Bulgaria, adding he was disappointed by Bulgaria's failure to obtain sensible results and people continuing to witness corruption in too many places. Van Orden gives the issue with the abuse of European funds as a stark example of corruption still raging in the country, despite the fact that some steps in the right direction have been taken.
Before entering politics, Geoffrey Van Orden had a long career as a soldier and military intelligence officer. He was first elected as a MEP from the British Conservative Party in 1999. Van Orden was a rapporteur for Bulgaria before the joining of the European Union. He is considered one of the most ardent supporters of the reactivation of Units 3 and 4 of the "Kozloduy" Nuclear Power Plant.
