Bulgarian workers hold the lead in taking sick leave, according to a survey of companies in Europe and America by the consultancy company Mercer, published in the "Economist" magazine.
Workers in Bulgaria took most time off for health related reasons - 22 days average in 2007. The Portuguese hold the second place, but only with 12 days per year, followed by the Czech Republic with 11 days.
Employees in Turkey, America and Britain are at the bottom of the list with an average of 6 days or less per year.
According to the research, twice as many firms noted a rise in the number of "sick days" taken by staff in recent years than those that had seen an improvement.
