France's Ambassador to Bulgaria Etienne de Poncins said on Sunday that the proper functioning of the Bulgarian state and judicial system had severe difficulties.

Earlier this week, de Poncins expressed his indignation at the ruling of the Veliko Turnovo Appellate Court, which acquitted the perpetrators of the murder of the Bulgarian student at the Sorbonne, Martin Borilski.

In 2000, Borilski was discovered brutally murdered by French firemen in his apartment in Paris. His body was tied down with a sweater, and his skull was broken with a dumbbell. There were 93 stabbing wounds on his corpse.

"The French police presented specific evidence to their Bulgarian colleagues, and the fact that there is no sentence, no jail, and that all this is taking a very long period of time, speaks about difficulties in the functioning of the Bulgarian judicial system and state", His Excellency declared in an interview for the Darik Radio.

De Poncins pointed out the issues might be the result of problems in the legislation, i.e. it might be favoring the persons charged with crimes, or of corruption, which could explain the slow pace of a number of cases.

"You know that the EU is expecting specific sentences of certain criminals, corrupt officials. As of now, there are no such instances showing progress in this respect", the Ambassador concluded.
