Some 270 trucks are stuck for seven days in a row at the Kulata checkpoint on the Bulgarian side of the border with Greece, as thousands of Greek farmers are still blockading the major roads in protest.
Bulgaria's Minister of EU Affairs, Gergana Grancharova, is meeting Monday with the Greek Foreign Minister, Dora Bakoyannis, whereas Bulgaria's Deputy Foreign Minister, Lyubomir Kyuchukov, has announced the country was going to ask the EU for help to deal with the situation.
There is no line of waiting trucks to cross the Bulgaria-Greece border only at the easternmost checkpoint Kapitan Petkov Voivoda-Ormenion. There are long lines at Ilinden-Eksohi and Kulata-Promahon.
The protesting Greek farmers are demanding a three-year moratorium on the repayment of bank credits, higher prices of agricultural commodities, and a reduction in diesel prices.
They have announced that they were going to continue the blockades of major roads all across Greece after they turned down an support package of EUR 500 M proposed by the Minister of Agriculture.
Bulgarian truck and bus transport companies are expected to meet later on Monday in order to consider asking for state compensations for their losses from the ongoing blockade of the border.
