`The breakout and the development of the ethnic conflict in Macedonia poses a real threat to Bulgaria`s national interests`, reads a memorandum on Bulgaria`s position on Macedonia released by the Research Centre for Bulgarian National Strategy and the Macedonian Research Institute Friday. The document discusses the situation in the region and its historical prerequisites, the factors that caused the ethnic conflict, and the danger of Bulgaria and Greece becoming involved. According to the authors of the memorandum, whose aim is to warn scholars and politicians of the possible impact of the conflict and recommend ways to mitigate it, the strategy of the Albanian expansion in Macedonia is identical with the one for Kosovo. The strategy is based on two principal tenets: `have children and populate` and `buy and expand, no matter what the price is`. There is a real danger for Macedonia to become a second Kosovo in about 15 years, the scholars say. The Bulgarian Government does not have a clear position on the conflict and does not appreciate its ethnic nature, the authors say. The memorandum is intended to invite politicians to a discussion, which will hopefully result in a clear position on the conflict, Macedonian Research Institute Director Prof. Dimiter Gotsev told the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA). Copies of the document have been handed to the MPs in the new parliament and the Bulgarian President. It will also be presented to foreign diplomats based in this country within a week, and to the new government once it is formed.
