A book, exploring all speculations and clues concerning the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II went out on the Bulgarian market the day before the historic visit of the Pope to Bulgaria (www.popeinbulgaria.com). The author, Polish journalist Eugeniusz Guz, defends the theory that Mehmet Ali Agca, who tried to kill the Pope, had been directed by Turkey's fundamentalist extreme right, which was guided by religious rather than political motives. "The Attempt on the Pope's Life: Has the Mystery Been Unravelled?" provides information on the events following the shots in St Peter's Square on May 13, 1981. Guz categorically refutes the "Bulgarian connection" theory about the attempted assassination and offers to its readers a glimpse at the secrets of the Vatican and the links of the Holy See with the Italian Mafia.
