Bulgaria's Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev said Saturday the gangsters from the country's hardest transition period - the so called "mutri" - were disappearing slowly but surely.
Velchev said in an interview for the Darik Radio that Bulgaria's post-socialist Transition was already over in many spheres including economy and politics, but it would only be completed when all the gangsters of this era finally become extinct.
"I agree that we do not have the required results to convince our EU partners and ourselves that Bulgaria is really successful in fighting organized crime and corruption. But I do not agree that we are not exerting efforts, and that there are no results whatsoever. This would not be a just thing to say", the Chief Prosecutor said adding that about 60 organized crime groups had been destroyed in 2009.
Velchev also pointed out that the prosecution had done its job well in any single corruption case, in which the sufficient evidence had been revealed. He added the Bulgarian society tended to resort to sarcastic comments too quickly, and to stick to negative opinions on things that most people not always understood.
He explained the noisy investigation campaign against the two notorious businessmen from Dupnitsa, the so called Galevi Brothers, was going to produce results later.
The Chief Prosecutor also said Bulgaria's legislation had many things to be improved but that the judicial system was not justified in blaming all its problems and lack of results on flawed laws.

If the mutri are becoming extinct its only because they have legalised their affairs and are now 'businessmen' and not because they have been put in jail....

It is just aging - the original mutris who were in their early 30s in the early 1990s are now about 50 years old, have a couple of children about 20 - 25 years old who, unlike their parents, have a good education and speak at least English.
I spoke to one of them in the summer, he told me he did very bad things 10 and 15 years ago, was friends with Karamanski, Kyulev and all that bunch but didnt care anymore - he has some restaurants, hotels, real estate and only wants to do his job and have some fun.
Some young mutris contacted him to help beating up or kill somebody and he told them "Guys, leave me alone - I dont see and hear very well anymore, I have problems with my back, etc.";)

Quite right Mat, they have "gone legit" and the Oligarchs are the new power.
"Velchev said in an interview for the Darik Radio that Bulgaria's post-socialist Transition was already over in many spheres including economy and politics, but it would only be completed when all the gangsters of this era finally become extinct. "
2005 was a good year for "extinction" of mutri, all those contract killings. Maybe that's what Velchev is hinting at: further extra-judicial killings by "shadowy" killers who are never caught? Surely DANS has nothing to do with it all?

The criminals have just changed into more respectable, legit business people but they are still here, washing their millions as always. Nothing this bunch has done has halted corruption or crime one iota. NEXT!

Well it is said to read such ballony words. Nothing of the kind has happened in Bulgaria. All the guys run various "serious" businessess. If corruption has been practiced by Siemens in Germany, and the Munich based Bavarian, experts, which over years are providing BUlgarias prosecuters with advise, how come that they did not discover the corruption practices Siemens used for decades, until dsicovered in 2003-2005. Why had Siemenst to pay 1.6 Billionpenalties in the US for bribing practices? How come that Germany is teaching bulgarians how not to bribe, when obviously the biggest corruption case come from that european country and the US.The lakeys in East and West should stop their permanent shouting and you Mr. prosecuter watch out what you are talking about, since it is simply wrong. To make such statements in public, Mr. Veltchev, is not only unwise, because is is not true!
