The US President-elect Barack Obama nominated Monday night the Nobel-prize winning physicist Steven Chu as the Energy Secretary in his administration.

At a press conference at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, Obama presented the members of his environmental team as well as his agenda for the environment that he believes is critical for fixing America's key problems in the economy and national security sectors.

Steven Chu is a professor of physics and molecular at the University of California at Berkeley. Since 2004 he has been the Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which is the oldest of the national laboratories of the Energy Department.

In 1997 he was the co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics "for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light".

"The scientists at our national labs will have a distinguished peer at the helm. His appointment should send a signal to all that my Administration will value science, we will make decisions based on the facts, and we understand that the facts demand bold action," Obama said as quoted by the AHN.

Steven Chu is known as a leading proponent of reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the development of renewable energy sources.
