Italian Magazine: Corruption, Lack of Indictibility Reign in Bulgaria

The Italian L'espresso Magazine has sharply criticized the reality in Bulgaria and especially the corruption practices and the lack of indictability in a reportage published in its new issue.

The media report, written by Roberto Di Caro, emphasizes on the fact that business, mafia and politics interweave in "the sick country."

The magazine defines the freezing of EUR 220 M of the EU funds as a "loud slap" for Bulgaria. It also cites a statement made by the writer Anton Donchev who claim it is a catastrophe for a country, which has 7.7 million citizens.

There is mentioned also a statement of Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev who has recently accused the western media of ruining the image of the country.

Stories told by some ordinary Bulgarians have been included in the article to show how easy it is to pay for getting a driving license or to bribe policemen.

According to the weekly, Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov is the one, who gains credit due to the present social discontent.

In an interview for L'espresso, he claims the ruling government is to blame for the high levels of corruption.

Asked what he would do if being elected prime minister, Borissov says he would appoint professionals, chosen by Brussels, at all key positions in the country's management. The aim is to prevent stealing more money from the state's exchequer.

"Except that, I would take off the political umbrella, which now protects the Prosecutors' Office," he adds.
