Greek students have vowed a fourth day of protests in Athens over the fatal shooting of an anarchist teenager by police.

The funeral on Tuesday of the 15-year-old schoolboy is expected to spark more riots in Greece following three days of the country's worst unrest in decades.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has vowed to end the riots, but a government spokesman denied reports that they planned to declare martial law.

More than 50 people have been hurt and dozens of shops, banks and cars damaged as street battles erupted across the country with youths carrying anarchist flags and yelling "Cops! Pigs! Murderers!" at police.

The shooting of Alexandros Grigoropoulos was the catalyst for the violence, but it comes along with plummeting popularity of the centre-right government against a backdrop of high youth unemployment, rising cost of living, and a widening gap between rich and poor.
