Veterinary inspectors from the Bulgarian National Veterinary Services imposed a ban on 60 tons of pork meet imported from Ireland.

The meat has entered the country in the beginning of December and was found in refrigerator storage facilities in Sofia and Plovdiv, the National Veterinary Services' press center reported on Monday.

In addition, the inspectors have recommended to a private company with several truckloads of meat from Ireland on their way to Bulgaria, to take the meat back.

All 112 refrigerator storage facilities all over Bulgaria are to be checked by the end of the day. All 437 meat processing plants are scheduled to be checked by December 10.

An order, issued by the Services' Director Iordan Voynov, mandates that all meat from Ireland as well as all products made with such meat, are to be confiscated. If the analysis finds that the meat or any of the products contain dioxin, they would be destroyed.

The samples are going to be sent for analysis to international, specialized and accredited laboratories and the results are expected in 3 to 5 days.

Bulgaria has received the signal about dioxin contamination in meat from Ireland via the European Union emergency information system.
