The Bulgarian citizens should be sure the Socialist party will use its authority and expert knowledge to protect them from all the bad things that could happen in Europe and other parts of the world, said Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev at the opening of the formation's 47th Congress on Saturday.

"There is nothing more important for us than the parliamentary and EP elections to be held next year," the premier explained.

"The Socialist party has to send three messages to its supporters - those for unity, development and renovation. That is why we are now going to adopt new regulations, program and political frame," Stanishev added.

He said also that the opposition dug a grave for the now ruling government but it did not fall into it.

The prime minister presented the guests at the forum with his book Why Are We Socialists?"

In his speech, Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov expressed his expectations that the Socialist party is to clarify its plans for ending the term during the congress.

The Socialist party congress is held under the motto "We create better future". Representatives of its coalition partners NMSP and the Turkish ethnic party are among the guests at the forum.
