People who live in Northern Europe are the happiest among the continent's inhabitants, while those from the Balkans are most unhappy, a poll focused on the way of life in different European countries reveals.

The poll was conducted by the European Union (EU) trough an agency with headquarters in Dublin. The poll's data shows that overall people in Europe are satisfied with their quality of life.

The Danes rank first as the happiest in Europe, followed by the Swedish, the Finish and the Norwegian.

Bulgarians are the least happy people on the old continent, surpassed only by Macedonians in their level of dissatisfaction.

The agency has polled over 35,000 people in the 27 countries members of the EU, in the candidate member countries - Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey as well as in Norway.

The poll was conducted from September 2007 to February 2008 - a period significantly preceding the current financial crisis.

On the average Europeans rank their quality of life as 7 on a scale from 1 to 10, while their happiness is ranked at 7,5.

On the same scale, the Danes estimate their happiness at 8,3 and their satisfaction at 8,5.

Bulgarians rank their happiness at 5,8 and their quality of life at 5.

"The differences in those rankings demonstrate significant fluctuations in the conditions and in the everyday life of Europeans from different countries with well-being in the former socialist countries varying on a large scale among different social groups. People with low income and the elderly tend to complain the most," the Director of the agency in charge of the research commented.

People from Northern Europe are the most optimistic with 75% of them giving optimistic answers compared to less than 50% in France, Italy, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Hungary.

According to the poll, Hungarians are the most pessimistic people in Europe.
