Current US Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales have been indicted on separate charges related to alleged prisoner abuse in federal detention centers, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing Willacy County, Texas, District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra.

Willacy is near the United States-Mexico border.

The Texas grand jury has charged US Vice-President Dick Cheney for "organised criminal activity" related to alleged abuse of private prison inmates.

The 3-page long indictment involves Cheney's USD 85 M investment in the Vanguard Group - an investment management company that reportedly has interests in the prison companies in charge of the detention centers.

The indictment charges Gonzales with using his attorney general position to halt investigations into abuse at the detention centers.
The grand jury wrote that it made its decision "with great sadness," but said they had no other choice but to indict Mr Cheney and Mr Gonzales "because we love our country."

The indictment has not been seen by a judge, who could dismiss it.

Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell refused to comment on the Court's decision because, "the Vice President has not received a cope of the indictment."
