A law suit against former Bulgarian Interior Minister Rumen Petkov, initiated by the German investigative reporter Urgen Rot, would mean that the reporter believes in Justice in Bulgaria, according to Rot own statements.

Urgen Rot spoke on Wednesday during a special press conference for Bulgarian journalists in connection to the defamation claim filed by Petkov with Sofia City Court. The former Interior Minister has filed the claim due to alleged statements made by the German reporter in his book "The New Demons."

Rot explained that in his book he has used anonymous sources, who were trustworthy and had reliable information about certain people in Bulgaria, adding that he has written the book guided by the principle of "coverage due to suspicions".

"The book is a good reflection of the global picture in Bulgaria, despite the possibility of having some factual mistakes," Rot said.

The German reporter pointed out that the work of Bulgarian journalists was often difficult due to political influences on the Bulgarian police and on the legal system, which interfered with finding the truth.

"I have never seen so much fear and hesitation on the part of journalists to voice their opinions as in Bulgaria," Rot said, adding that what Petkov was suing him for was not even included in the book.

When asked if he was going to also initiate legal proceedings against the former Bulgarian Interior Minister, Rot replied: "This would mean that I trust Bulgarian Justice, and my faith in an independent legal system in the country is relatively small."
