Bulgaria can save about BGN 100 M per year if the measures to save energy would be strictly applied, Kostadinka Todorova, Director of the Directorate "Energy Effectiveness and Environment Preservation" at the Bulgarian Economy Ministry stated on Tuesday.
According to Todorova, Bulgaria is going to save BGN 900 M in the next 9 years by applying all measures included in the new Law for Effective Energy. Currently, the average energy use in Bulgaria is by 6,9% higher than the average use in the European Union (EU).
Todorova explained how just building insulation would decrease energy expenses by 50% and pointed out that the financing of the energy saving measures was going to be assisted by the State. According to the Director, financial mechanisms to credit energy effectiveness existed in Bulgaria since 2004 - 2005.
The Chair of the Bulgarian Business Chamber, Bozhidar Danev stated that the largest and most ineffective energy user in the country was the energy sector itself.
"52% of all losses from the production and the transfer of energy come from the energy sector," Danev said, adding that in the EU such losses are estimated at 35%.
According to Danev, the most effective energy use in Bulgaria was the one of natural gas, however household use of natural gas in the country was only 1% compared to 45% in the EU.
