The American Ambassador to Sofia Nancy McEldowney visited Friday the Graf Ignatievo Air Base in southern Bulgaria, where she flew in a F-16 fighter of the US Air Force.

"While we are dealing with economic stability, we should not forget that the partnership in the defense sector remains a priority", Her Excellency stated.

Ambassador McEldowney made it clear that the ongoing global financial crisis was not going to affect the US military projects in Bulgaria. She reminded that the agreements for the modernization of the military facilities for joint usage by the Bulgarian and US armies, which are worth about USD 50 M, had recently been approved.

McEldowney also expressed her hopes that the Bulgaria's biometric passport data system was going to be launched soon, which would bring the country a step closer to its inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Program.

The American Ambassador to Sofia visited the Graf Ignatievo Air Base only three days before the start of the joint military drills of the Bulgarian and the US air forces, which are scheduled to take place between November 10 and November 25.
