Afghan President Wants Obama to Put End to Civilian Deaths

As 37 civilians have been killed in an airstrike of US-led troops in southern Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai urged election winner Barack Obama to bring an end to civilian deaths.

"Our demand is that there will be no civilian casualties in Afghanistan. We cannot win the fight against terrorism with air strikes," Karzai said. "This is my first demand of the new president of the United States - to put an end to civilian casualties."

The bombing Monday afternoon of the remote village of Wech Baghtu destroyed an Afghan housing complex where women and children had gathered for a wedding party.

The Associated Press, quoting a villager at the scene, reported 23 children and 10 women were killed.

"If innocent people were killed in this operation, we apologize and express our condolences," US military spokesman said.
