Republican John McCain has won Kentucky and Democrat Barack Obama has won Vermont as the first results began coming in from Tuesday's presidential election, according to projections by CNN and NBC News.

Vermont has three electoral votes and Kentucky has eight. Going into the election, the latest polls in Kentucky showed McCain up, 51-42 percent while Vermont polls showed Obama up, 57-36 percent.

The polls had closed in eight states by 7:30 p.m. ET. In addition to Kentucky, Vermont and Indiana, polls also closed in Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, but CNN is not yet projecting a winner in those states.

Obama was leading in Ohio and McCain was leading in West Virginia, NBC News said, although it cautioned that the results remained too early to call definitively.

NBC said it was too early to project results in Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. In Indiana and North Carolina, two historically reliably Republican states, the vote was too close to call.

Results were expected to be delayed across the country as record numbers of voters flocked to polling stations, energized by an election in which they would select either the nation's first black president or its first female vice president.
