5 Suicide Bomb Attacks Hit Somalia

World | October 29, 2008, Wednesday // 00:00

Suicide bombers struck a UN compound, the Ethiopian consulate and government security posts, killing or wounding dozens of people, according to officials and witnesses.

Three of the five bombings hit the breakaway republic of Somaliland, one of them exploding at the palace of the regional president.

The wave of bombings appeared to have been timed to coincide with a meeting of east African leaders in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss a new peace deal.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. Officials blamed a militant Islamic group called the Shabab, which the United States considers a terrorist organization.

The Shabab has been waging a relentless war against Somalia's weak transitional government, but most of its attacks have been confined to south-central Somalia.
