The President of the Russian Federation Dmitriy Medvedev appointed Friday Ambassadors to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the two republics, which declared their independence from Georgia in August, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia's Ambassador to Abkhazia will be Semen Grigoriev, who is a former Ambassador to Afghanistan and for the past year and a half has been working on the mediation of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict.

The first Russian Ambassador to South Ossetia is Elbrus Kargiev, who is a diplomat with experience in Russia's Embassy in Turkey.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which seceded from Georgia after a short Georgian-Russian military conflict in August, were recognized by Russia on August 26, 2008.

The only other country that has recognized them was Nicaragua, which did so on September 5, 2008.
