The project for the first hybrid power plant in Bulgaria, which will produce electricity from wind and solar energy, was presented Thursday in Sofia.

The "Zlaten Yug" ("Golden South") wind and photovoltaic power plant will be located in the village of Troyanovo, Kameno Municipality, 14 km northwest of the city of Burgas.

The total investment in the hybrid power plant will be EUR 38 M, and it will be completed in three stages: EUR 8 M will be invested in 2008-2009, EUR 14 M will be invested in 2009-2010, and EUR 16 M will be spent in 2011-2012.

The investor in the project is the Bulgarian company Solar BG, whereas the project was prepared by the Ecowatt Technologies Foundation, chaired by Georgi Tonchev.

The total energy producing capacity of the Golden South plant will be 6,5 MW, including wind turbines with 2 MW, and photovoltaic modules with 4,5 MW.

The total area of the wind turbines park is 20 decares, and the area of the photovoltaic park is 76 decares. The investment is expected to be repaid in nine years.

The total energy output of the hybrid plant will save the emission of 155 000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. It will be enough to satisfy the energy needs of 6 300 families.

The hybrid plant has been design to take advantage of the annual wind and solar energy patterns, and to serve best the peak periods of electricity consumption in the winter and in the summer.
