Russian Press: Bulgaria Is Playing Dangerous Game with Russia and Georgia

Politics | September 18, 2008, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgaria is involved in a dangerous game of maneuvering between Russia, Georgia, NATO and the EU, the Russian newspaper "Pravda" comments in an article on Thursday.

"Bulgaria is planning to actively use its potential in order to help settle the disputes between Russia and the EU. More than anyone else, we understand Russia's arguments, and the apprehensions of the other countries with respect to it, and we will be very active in the Russia-EU negotiations on all issues."

Pravda's article starts with this quote by Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, and goes on to criticize Bulgaria about its policies.

According to the Russian paper, Bulgaria was "too small to sell arms to the Georgian aggressors, to provide NATO with military bases, to fool around with Russia, and to believe that its territory will become a energy distribution center for Europe", all at the same time.

The article points out that in 2007 Bulgaria sold to Georgia arms and military equipment for USD 70 M. It cites Bulgaria's official statistics that the country's military exports in 2007 were worth a total of USD 200 M.

Thus, Pravda concludes that one third of Bulgaria's military exports had gone to Georgia, which had become the number one buyer of Bulgarian arms.

According to the author of the article, Bulgaria was now trying to keep quiet about these facts over the "genocide carried out by Georgia", while taking advantage of its own geopolitical position to have Russian pipelines go through its territory.

The paper concludes by asking sarcastically whether Bulgaria was not going to fall down from the fence it was sitting on.
