Second Child Dies in Chinese Baby Milk Scandal

Chinese state media reported Monday that a second infant has died after ingesting contaminated baby formula.

The number of Chinese infants stricken with kidney stones caused by contaminated milk powder soared to 1,253, the Chinese Ministry of Health said on Monday. Among the babies, 53 are in critical condition.

The tainted milk powder was produced by the Sanlu Group, the country's diary giant. The powder was found to contain melamine, a chemical believed to cause the condition.

"As many as 10,000 infants may have drunk the contaminated Sanlu milk powder," vice health minister Ma Shaowei warned.

It is not believed that the milk powder was exported to any other country except Taiwan, where authorities have banned all imports of Sanlu diary products.
