About 60,000 first-grade students went to school for the first time on Monday as the school year in Bulgaria started.

According to statistics, there are 7,000 less first graders compared to 2007. A total of 249 schools in the country have been closed during the last year due to lack of students.

Officials said 14,457 students dropped out of school in 2007 as most dropouts are aged 13-16.
