Nicaragua is preparing to officially recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Nicaraguan officials said on Thursday.

"We have started preparing all the necessary documentation for an official recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia following instructions issued by the president," Nicaraguan Deputy Foreign Minister Manuel Coronel Kautz has said as cited by Ria Novosti.

"Nicaragua recognizes the independence of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia and fully supports the Russian government's position," President Daniel Ortega previously declared.

Nicaragua would become the first country after Russia to recognize the two republics as independent states.

Western nations have strongly criticized Russia for its "disproportionate" response to Georgia's attack on South Ossetia and the subsequent recognition of the breakaway provinces.

This is basically not about representing South Ossentia & Abkhazia. Its show your allegiance. Russia or United States. Nicaragua has chosen Russia obviously.

Also I hear from a reliable source that Belarus is going to let Russian soldiers into their country so they can attack the Ukraine.

I was just looking for the news link, but it seems to have gone down. In it, the Belarus government authorized Russian military bases to be set up. It looks like Ukrane might be next to get rolled on by the bear.

There is a current crisis in the Ukranian government over US or Russian allegance:

"UKRAINE'S president, Viktor Yushchenko, has threatened to dismiss parliament and call early elections after the country's coalition government fell apart in an acrimonious dispute that could intensify divisions between the country's pro-Western and pro-Russian factions."

KIEV, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko's party officially pulled out of the ruling pro-Western coalition on Wednesday amid a government dispute over presidential powers and the Georgia-Russia conflict.

Ukraine to increase rent for Russian Fleet by up to 25 times
From January 1, 2009, the Ukrainian leadership is planning to put up the rent for the Crimean territories where Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is stationed, according to Russia’s Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper. It claims the corresponding documents are being prepared by Ukraine’s Ministries of Foreign Relations and Defence.

They authorized it already in Belarus?? I just read the other day that there would be a "vote" on the issue in about a week. The site is down but which site reported that they already authorized it?

ps/ Thank you for all the links about the Ukraine.

Fleur, I don't remember if they'd (Belarus) authorized it yet and the link is gone, sorry.

I'm sure it's a done deal, though, either way. Belarus sides with Russia.

I really don't know why there has to be sides, but in my mind the US is pushing for this division.

"but in my mind the US is pushing for this division."

I think its Russia who wants to be publicly supported over the break away provinces. Belarus I think would naturally side with Russia because it's economy depends on it. Belarus siding with the Us ever is way less likely. I still think its a bad deal for Belarus. The Russian troops enter Belarus to attack Ukraine. Ukraine fights back and hits? Belarus? I think Belarus if they let Russia do this might as well change their name back..

"I think its Russia who wants to be publicly supported over the break away provinces"

I don't know if the Russians care that much about support. Those provinces will never be part of Georgia, and I suspect that Georgia can kiss NATO goodbye, regardless of all the talk.
It takes one country to veto membership and there are too many NATO members dependent on Russia for energy.
The Russians will find a defector for sure.

Funguy is right - it's the US that's attempting to create divisions in Russia's backyard.
Belarus are basically Russians, as is half of Ukraine.
As usual the Americans are underestimating the importance of ethnic loyalties.
No one is going to attack Ukraine but the Americans need to get their nose out of there, or it will get seriously bloody.

No way someone like Putin is going to go dawn in history as the one who lost the Crimea to the West, after all the blood the Russians spilled over and over again for it.
I suspect the Russians may just walk in and take possession of the naval facilities, as they probably should.
I wouldn't trust the Ukrainian leadership with my navy for a minute - they are all in the US pockets.

I just feel bad for all the innocents who are walking around right now, but will end up dead, thanks to the reckless American manipulations.
Russia won't stand by while being elbowed out of her own backyard and her people being designated to different made up states, loyal to the US.

kolega,

Ukrainians do not consider themselves Russian and they hate Russia. I have worked with a Ukrainian engineer who told me so. And look at history. Ukraine and Russia is the same like Poland and Russia. Water and oil.

What about Chechnia? They are not ethnic Russian, how come Russia is holding them hostage? And why was Russia in Afghanistan for ten years? Imperialism? Imperator Putin?

"What about Chechnia? They are not ethnic Russian, how come Russia is holding them hostage? And why was Russia in Afghanistan for ten years? Imperialism? Imperator Putin?"

Yes.
No.
Yes.
Yes.

What is this again? Some "fairness" game?
This is geopolitics - it's about interests power and money - that's it!
Russia wants to be able to do exactly what the US is doing causally everywhere. They don't aspire to be better or morally superior or anything - that's American bullshit.

The Americans ruthlessly fukced with their allies the Serbs, when Russia was in a very bad place economically, and now it's payback time.
Nothing ever changes IAMB - this is humanity.
We are supposed to kill each other, we are supposed to attempt to take over - it's our nature.
I am just saying that the West habitually underestimates Russia at least once a century, and blunders in.
Usually they end up chased all the way home and many innocents get hurt in the process - that's all.

BTW I don't know who you talked to, but Ukraine is certainly not one nation.
The eastern part is mostly Russians and they will not stand for the forceful separation.

Hi petite Fleur,

Yes, I saw first hand last night the Kolegianalen's type of blame_America-for-everything protestors- two women and a man who tried to interrupt McCain's speech.. Did you noticed they were wearing the the CodePink colors and were quickly neutralized by the Secret Service, while the crowd shouted "USA, USA". It was a non-event. I am on my way back home and will soon post my analysis of the 8-week contest between Snobama and McCain for change.

Kolegialen,

Well your probably right now that I think about it. Since Russia doesn't have to look for the support. They know they have it. Instead what is going on is countries coming out to support Russia. Because those countries are afraid of being turned off. Is there anyway for all of this just to stop and no more conflicts??

Of course Russia looks for support - they tried to get the Chinese and other central Asian countries for CIS on board but it didnt work. Its not true they dont care - they repeat again and again they dont look for confrontation etc.

Russia can survive without political support but this doesnt mean they dont want to have one. Economically, politically its never fun to be isolated by the people who have the more money.

As for Crimea, it was gifted by Krustchev to Ukraine just as Alaska was sold the the US - deal done, land gone. There may be a problem with Crimea and Ukraine but not necessarily a war - the Russians are building a new naval base on their territory so they can affort to give up on Crimea. Now, if the Ukrainians make some very big mistake ...

"Economically, politically its never fun to be isolated by the people who have the more money."

Sure Creepy, but the fact is that they will never be isolated because they have the EU by the testicles and China too as the pipe is almost finished.
China needs Russia's raw materials now and in the future, as much as she needs American markets.
As far as Crimea - don't fool yourself - Russia will get it back, done deal indeed....

The US bullied itself, bribed and begged to get support for Kosovo - another made up country, and the Russians will do the same.
No difference.
Eventually it won't matter.
