The airport concessionaire of the two major Bulgarian Black Sea cities and ports, Varna and Bourgas - Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, is planning the construction of new passenger airpoort terminals, according to an announcement made Wednesday by the company's Chief Technical Director.

The new terminal investments for both airports are estimated at EUR 65 M. The terminal at the Bourgas airport would cost about EUR 36 M and will be a little larger than the one in Varna due to the heaviest traffic of tourists going to the Southern Black Sea Coast.

The new terminal in Bourgas will have 36 check-in counters, while the one in Varna will have 24.

The concept design of the new buildings is now ready while the trader to select the architectural and design team would be announced by the end of September.

The construction will begin in the middle of 2009 and the new terminals are scheduled to open by the start of the 2011 summer tourist season.

A total of 110 obsolete buildings at both airports are going to be demolished. The concessionaire is also going to purchase three new fire trucks to serve the airports.

In the first six months of the current year, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD has invested over BGN 12,5 M in the airports' improvement, with BGN 8,5 M of them invested in the replacement the old electrical systems.

BGN 1 M have been invested in the renovation of the older terminal of the airport in Varna while an additional BGN 800,000 have been used for the parking lot in front of the newer terminal.

In the mean time, the Director of the Varna airport said that the facility had served over 1,1 M passengers since the beginning of 2008, however this is 3% less compared with the same period of the previous year despite the fact that the serviced airplanes are with 6% more.

Russians constitute the majority of foreign visitors passing through the airport, followed by Germans and Brits.
