Several men dressed as policemen committed a highway robbery on the E-80 Road close to the southern Bulgarian town of Purvomay around 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

The criminals used a police lamp to pull over a Mercedes with two foreign citizens - a man and woman, whose home country has not been specified by the Interior Ministry.

The attackers abducted the two people, and left them with handcuffs close to the nearby village of Turkmen, where the victims were discovered by shepherds.

The criminals stole about EUR 1000 and personal belongings from the Mercedes, which was later found burned close to the village of Granit in the Chirpan Municipality.

The highway robbery is being investigated by a special team of the police directorates from the cities of Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, and Stara Zagora.
