Experts Speak over Problem with Stray Dogs, Rabies at Press Conference in Sofia
Officials are to present a new program for preventing rabies spreading among the homeless animals, which will be launched in 2009.
The General Manager of Bulgaria's National Veterinary Service (NVS), Zheko Baychev, his Deputy Damyan Iliev as well as the Director of Animal Health Care Directorate, Pencho Kamenov will be among the participants in the discussion.
NVS has recently said there is danger of rabies in Sofia, as there were registered cases of wild animals infected with the disease attacking dogs in the suburbs of the city.
On August 1, an infected wild fox attacked a home dog in the district of Vladaya, Dr. Iliev, reported and added that all animals in the district are now under quarantine.
All animals on the territory of Vladaya have already been vaccinated, Iliev said. He advised dog owners to keep their animals on a leash and citizens to stay away of stray dogs.
Meanwhile, the director of Sofia's municipal company, Ecoravnovesie, which is responsible for the city's stray dogs, said that the warning seems like provocation and there is absolutely no danger of rabies spreading in Sofia.
Mr Miroslav Naydenov pointed out that there is no single case of a stray dog infected with rabies in Vladaya.
From the NVS said that 40 cases of rabies are registered annually in Bulgaria and almost half of them are on the territory of Sofia and the region around.

This is not the right time to deal with dogs, cats, smoking, poverty, corruption, garbage,
communist past, EU directives and everything that makes n European country European-right now Bulgaria has more pressing projects to deal with-to host a Georgia-Russia meeting in Sofia and to try to set up a new meeting of Bulgarians living abroad.
For problems like that there is only one right time measurement:
What means everything from now till the cows come home...
But I learned one thing about it, there is even somebody (un)responsible for stray dogs...
W Europa sme!
""which will be launched in 2009""
So why they need to push everything years ahead instead of taking action right away, this as the smoking in public places ban, which just GOD knows when this will take effect, are really big problems in Sofia. As a parent of 2 kids, taking them to the park for a walk is a real problem, 1st because these animals are everywhere and you really never know when they will get agressive and 2nd because of all the people smoking around, I know as a ex-smoker, everyone have the right to smoke but i think that right finish where my right to get some fresh air (specially in a park full of kids) starts, i think the hell will frezze before the goverment here do something !!!
