The MP from Bulgaria's ruling Socialist Party Maya Manolova announced Monday the party was attempting to solve the problem with the several hundred phantom parties in the country with a new piece of legislation.

According to the proposed new Political Parties Act, all political parties which received fewer than 1% of all votes in two consecutive national elections would have to be disbanded. This requirement will not apply to newly founded political parties.

"The most important thing now is the concern that a number of political entities might enter politics in unregulated way - through a non-political vote, a business vote, a corporate vote; through the buying of votes. In order to solve this problem, we need to take drastic measures against the local feudalization", Manolova explained.

The bill of the ruling socialists also prohibits firms from making donations to political parties but increases the limit for donations by physical persons from BGN 10 000 to BGN 30 000.

MP Manolova pointed out it was unrealistic for any party to survive only on the state subsidy. She called upon all political parties for staging cheaper elections campaigns, fewer PR-campaigns in the media, and more personal meetings with the eligible voters.
